Maca root (Latin: Lapidium meyenii) is native to the high Andes of Peru. It belongs to the crucifer family and to the cress genus. The parts of the plant above ground grow no higher than 20 cm. The storage tubers, which sit directly beneath the soil surface, resemble the turnip commonly known here. Before maca powder is produced, the maca roots are dried for several weeks, then cleaned and chopped before being gently ground into a fine powder. Organic maca powder has a sweet and bitter flavor. It is often used as an ingredient in smoothies, yogurt, porridge, or muesli, and can also add flavor to sweets and desserts. It pairs particularly well with vanilla and chocolate.
