Elastic ligatures are part of orthodontic treatment that allows patients to choose the colors of their braces. Available in a variety of colors, from clear and pastel to vibrant. All colors of the rainbow can be placed on your braces. The elastic ligature is the part available in different colors. Some people refer to them as elastomeric bands or simply bands. The bracket on the tooth has a slot and wings. The wire goes through the slot, and then the elastic band goes over the wire and is secured by the wings of the bracket. The elastic band holds the wire in place. When a patient comes in for treatment, all elastic bands are removed and replaced, allowing for different colors each month. Patients are very creative with color combinations, often using two colors that alternate from one tooth to the next, while some opt for a rainbow of colors. How are the elastic bands removed and placed? During your visit, an assistant will use a scaler to remove all your elastic bands. The orthodontist will then decide if adjustments to your existing wire are needed or if the wire needs to be changed. Once all changes are made, the elastic bands are placed back with a hemostat.
