These air-powered internal filters operate on the mammoth pump, or airlift, principle. An air pump feeds air through a hose into the riser tube. The air carries aquarium water upward, drawing water through the fine sponge with its ideal surface area and mechanically filtering the aquarium water. The optimized sponges provide a habitat for nitrifying bacteria, which are important for breaking down pollutants. These filters are ideal for raising larvae and juvenile fish, which might otherwise be drawn into conventional filters due to their small size and swimming behavior.
